Counterguerrilla Warfare in Greece during WW2
. During World War II
a small
German expeditionary unit fought hordes of Greek communists
to a standstill during four years of war in the most inhospitable of
mountains. Of course the tactics, operational art and strategy that the
Germans used against the Greek communists and their British,
Bulgarian and Soviet advisers are accurately described in

Review Table of Contents
"In Salonika, the one large area occupied by German troops, guerrilla operations were initiated soon after the
occupation began. North of Salonika, in an area garrisoned by the German 164th Infantry Division, there were acts
of sabotage and terrorism as early as October 1941. The German division effected prompt and severe retaliation. In
seven towns in the vicinity of Salonika, between 23 and 25 October, troops of the 164th Division rounded up all
males between the ages of 16 and 60 and executed them -- a total of 416 men and boys. The seven villages were
razed and the women and children resettled in other villages. A group of six Moscow-trained Bulgarian Communists
who had been parachuted into the area to encourage and lead a resistance, were quickly rounded up and just as
quickly dispatched. Such prompt and drastic action appeared to discourage the flowering of the guerrilla movement
in that region. Although resistance groups continued to function clandestinely within the city of Salonika, overt
action against the German forces in that part of the country did not develop again for many months. Only the
Germans understood that when fighting communists, terror must be used along with brutal, relentless reprisals.
Revenge is the hot engine of victorious war."
